The new world of work: a Hyperarchy structure in a Network-Centric Organization

The world has changed. In 20th century the media industry created products consisting of paper and ink, in 21st century the same industry creates product consisting out of bits and bytes. The work in the media industry has shifted for a craftsmanship to knowledge work. This requires a new way of working and asks for new management skills. In the Master thesis of the study Master of Arts in Art Management I researched and explained this new way of working, what kind of management skills are required and the possibilities it creates.A source of inspiration for my research was this short movie on Youtube.com.

For my research I needed a theoretical framework what I could use a guideline throughout the document. I use vision of ”Het Nieuwe Werken” (the new world of working) from Microsoft the Netherlands and the definition of Bijl.

“HNW is a vision where the recent developments in the information technology are the catalyst for a better way of organizing and managing knowledge work. It is all about rebuilding the physical work environment, the organization structure and culture, the management style and the mentality of the knowledge workers and their managers.” (Bijl, 2007, p.27)

This sort movie show give you a basics explanation of ‘’Het Nieuwe Werken’’.

To understand the complete aspect of “The New World of Working”  and my vision on the subject I ask you to download the research document by using this link.

Streekstation de Game: A Augmented Reality Board Game

Commissioned by InnovatieNetwerk and designed and developed with a team of 8, this augmented reality boardgame shows Dutch aldermen and civil servants the advantages of the streekstation concept. My function in the project team was teamleader (project manager).

Streekstation de game is a cooperative game for 2 to 4 players. The goal of the game is to satisfy the needs of the cars that stop at the streekstation each turn. These cars either want locally produced food or local tourism. To satisfy the needs for locally produced food the farms on the gameboard need to produce food for the streekstation rather than for the world market. In order to this players have to replace the tiles of the world market products with tiles of streekstation products. To satisfy the needs for local tourism players have to replace the inaccessible nature tiles with accessible nature tiles. By replacing the tiles of the gameboard the digital landscape becomes more diverse and vibrant, farms start to earn more money because they produce food for the streekstation rather than for the worldmarket, and the local tourism income increases due to the attractive nature. Through these changes we try to show the advantages of the streekstation.
